Diabetics are Likely to Suffer Severe Cases of Melancholia

Diabetes is a disease that millions are suffering from, whether young or old. This chronic disease, according to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC), is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and may also cause blindness, loss of limb through amputation and kidney failure. Complications in different organs are also possible. In addition to all those problems, it may lead a person to the long and hard road of depression. In the light of research, the NDIC has found that those who are suffering from mood disorders have a 60 percent chance of having diabetes. Proper blood tests will help in screening people from this disease in insulin deficit.

The likeliness of a person with problems in managing his or her blood sugar is high, which makes other people assume that the two diseases are partners-in-crime. Many people have only fallen into depression or diabetes after some time of having either of the two. Diabetes is also seen as lifestyle disease which means that people who have certain bad habits are prone to acquiring this illness.

Experts have indicated several pointers on why a person with blood sugar problems has developed depression:

  • Being bound by limits. A person with a genuine love for food, who has problems of managing his or her blood sugar, would feel down when they are restricted with eating. Same goes for other things like exercise and daily activities.
  • Complications of the disease. This type of ailment has the ability to attract more illness which is why some people also have blood pressure problems, kidney failure and nerve damage. People having multiple health problems would surely feel miserable.
  • Suffering alone. A person with this sickness may feel alone and feels that their loved ones do not understand the pain that they feel.
However, doctors say that these patients still have hope because both of these ailments are manageable with proper diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosing depression or diabetes first would facilitate a better treatment regimen. Patients who understand their role in managing their condition are likely to be more cooperative than those who are unaware of the possible complications, experts say. That is why taking the necessary medications are very important. Antidepressants are used to manage the depressive symptoms but several problems have come to the attention of Zoloft users. It was seen that taking Zoloft during pregnancy may cause birth problems and these women are now contemplating on filing a Zoloft lawsuits.
